A Study on Nurses, Doctors and Hospice Volunteers’s Perception of the Hospice Care and Advanced Directives about the Terminal Cancer Patients

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the perception of doctors, nurses, and hospice volunteers of hospice care and advance directives of terminal cancer patients.
Methods: The data were collected from August 1 to September 31, 2010 using structured questionnaires. Subjects consisted of each of 100 nurses, doctors, and hospice volunteers and total 252 respondents (91 nurses, 80 doctors, and 81 hospice volunteers) participated in this study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: Compared to hospice volunteers, nurses and doctors have less comprehension of the needs of hospice (F=12.47, p<.001). In comparison to nurses and doctors, hospice volunteers had better understanding of the adjusting of advance directives (p=.020).
Conclusion: Nurses and doctors didn’t fully understand the notion of hospice care and advance directives. The findings of this study would provide the basis to educate nurses and doctors about hospice care and advance directives.
